About Julio Marino, 60 Years of Experience

Amidst his long career as a gallerist, art dealer, framer and artist, Mr. Marino has also built a reputation as an expert in art restoration that dates back to the 1950's. This blog will document some of his experiences and insights gained over nearly 60 years in the art world.

In Uruguay, Mr. Marino was regularly contracted by institutions including the National Museum of Visual Arts, the Department of Education & Culture, the Congress building, Montevideo City Hall, the City of Barcelona, the Museum of Fine Arts Juan Manuel Blanes, the Aparicio Saravia Museum, the Tomas Toribio Museum, the Museum of Man and Technology in Salto, the Municipal Museum of Colonia del Sacramento, the Gaucho and Mint Museum, the Ralli Museum in Punta del Este, the Museum of American Art in Maldonado, the Naval Club of Montevideo, the Central Bank, and the Banco Comercial. His work includes restorations of artworks by well-known Uruguayan artists including Joaquin Torres Garcia, Juan Manuel Blanes, Pedro Figari.

Since moving to the Washington DC area in 1995, he has worked on numerous restoration projects for private clients as well as institutions including the Cultural Institute of Mexico, several embassies, and the OAS Museum of the Americas




EXPERIENCE

1950-1965

General conservation and restoration of works for the National Museum of Visual Arts and for the Department of Education & Culture,(Uruguay). Supervised by Mr. Cantu Sienra, Museum Director, and renowned artist Vicente Martin.


1966-1973

Restoration, conservation, canvas stretching and cleaning oils, pastels, and paper artwork for museums, government departments, banks, other institutions and private collectors.


1974

Restoration and installation of a mural in a hall in the Congress building in Montevideo.


1975

Restoration and conservation (fungus removal) of a collection of drawings and watercolors by artist Pierre Fossey, belonging to the Montevideo Municipality and City Hall.


1976

Restoration and stretching of drawings and sketches by Joaquin Torres Garcia, belonging to the city of Barcelona. Sizes: 3m x 1.5m, painted on staging paper. Supervised by Architect E. Leborgne.

1977

Dismount and transport of the "Juramento de los Treinta y Tres Orientales" oil on canvas by Juan Manuel Blanes, from the Legislative Palace (Montevideo) to the Museum of Fine Arts Juan Manuel Blanes. Restoration, conservation, and canvas stretching was performed at the museum. Size: 3m x 6m. Supervised by the city Mayor, Dr. O. Rachetti.

1978-79

Mounting and setting up exhibits at the Aparicio Saravia Museum in the city of Cerro Largo. Restorations performed at the museum. Supervised by Mr. J. Rodriguez Delucchi.

1980

Restorations of artwork in various media for the Torivio Museum (Montevideo).


1981 - 1985

Restoration and conservation activities for the Museo del Hombre y la Tecnologia in the city of Salto.
Setting up exhibits, restoration and conservation of colonial artwork for the Museo de Colonia del Sacramento, in the historical city of Colonia.
Restorations and conservation of artwork for the Museo del Gaucho y la Moneda in Montevideo. Supervised by Prof. Fernando Assuncao.
Restoration of paintings by Manuel Larravide for the Naval Club of Montevideo.

1986 - 1990

Setting up exhibits and cataloguing the main artwork for the newly installed Museo Ralli in Punta del Este, Maldonado.



1991 - 1994

Restoration of murals by artists CARLOS CASIANO GONZALEZ and LUIS MAZZEY for the Museo de Arte Americano de Maldonado. Sizes: Three panels, 3x2m each; four panels, 2.25x2m each. Each panel was removed from its linen backing and stretched on canson paper. Technique: gouache. Supervised by J. Paez Vilaro.


1994 - 1995

Fungus removal and cleaning of drawings and etchings for the Museo de Arte Americano de Maldonado.
Restoration and conservation of oill paintings for the Banco Central in Montevideo.
Restoration and conservation of oil portraits of Board Presidents for the Banco Comercial Headquarters in Montevideo.


1996 - Present

Restoration, cleaning and conservation of oil paintins by PEDRO FIGARI,  NORBERTO BERDIA, J. PAGANI, W. BARCALA, W. AMARAL, J.M. BLANES, and others for the Embassy of Uruguay in Washington, DC.

Restoration, cleaning and conservation of oil paintings, watercolors and pastels on canvas and paper for private collectors and art galleries in the US.


2004

Restoration of 30 works of art at the Museum of the Americas at the Organization of American States in Washington DC.


2012

Restoration of the Music Room and works of art at the Cultural Institute of Mexico in Washington DC.
